Gunn was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her parents were designers for interiors Sharon Anna Kathryn Shana Gunn & Clemens Gunn Junior. Santa Fe Preparatory School, which she attended until 1986, when she graduated. She received her degree from Northwestern University in 1990 with a theater major. Gunn was a student at the British American Drama Academy, which she attended for one period of time in 1988. She lived in a house with Pamela Adlon after moving to Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn's character in the AMC show Breaking as Skyler white is among her roles that are the most famous. Gunn was nominated to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding supporting actress in the Drama Series for her performance, winning both 2013 and 2014. She also wrote an opinion article in August 2013 to The New York Times, discussing the negative reception of her role as a character.
